A day trip to Hebron & Bethleham in the West Bank in July 2008.
Hebron and Bethlehem are the two largest Palestinian cities in the southern part of the West Bank. The are administered by the Palestinian Authority while being isolated from Jerusalem and the northern West Bank due to Israel's construction of the 'Separation Barrier', hundreds of checkpoints, 'Jewish only' roads, and restrictions on travel into Jerusalem.
Hebron is one of the oldest cities in the West Bank and and has an old city of narrow, winding streets, flat-roofed stone houses, and old bazaars. It is also a point of frequent frictions between Palestinians and Jewish settlers with the worst situation being in the Old City where 400 settlers live, protected by 2,000 Israeli soldiers, among over 150,000 Palestinians.
Bethlehem has been an important city for the three monotheistic faiths throughout history and, especially to Christians as the birthplace of Jesus Christ. The city is now city is almost surrounded by Israeli settlements, military zones, and restricted areas.
